Inaugural boxing show not pulling punches

Event to bring some of state’s top amateur athletes to Southeast Colorado Springs.

A new boxing event will deliver Southeast Colorado Springs  ringside seats to some of the state’s best amateur athletes this weekend.

The inaugural Police Athletic League (PAL) Boxing Show is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Triple Threat Gym, 5739 Observation Court, Suite 120. Doors open to the public at noon.

As of Thursday, the ticket consisted of 22 bouts featuring some of the state’s top amateur fighters. But gym founder Charles “Coach Lev” Leverette said trainers were still calling to see if they could secure a spot for their fighters.

“They’re very excited,” he said. “It goes back to the atmosphere.”

With its vaulted ceilings and wide-open setting, Triple Threat is a veritable coliseum for practitioners and students of combative athletics. It offers space for boxing, MMA and Brazilian jiu jitsu fighters and attracts some of the sports’ premier athletes.

While the facilities and instruction (Leverette is a retired Army staff sergeant who has trained both Army boxing team and the US Olympic squad) are worthy of the best in the business, it’s the center’s cultural commitment to service that keeps the fighters and fans coming back.

In addition to being a fitness forum – the gym counts among its devotees three-time world champion and 2018 WBO welterweight belt holder Terence Crawford —  Triple Threat is home to a mentorship program for Colorado Springs youths. The program emphasizes engagement in athletics, in the classroom and at home … not necessarily in that order.

“Books before box,” Leverette said with a grin, as he proudly showed off an in-house computer lab and study room.

Tickets for Saturday’s show cost $10 for kids ages 5 to 15; $15 for those over 16 and $30 for VIP seats. The VIP tickets will include a ringside meal and access to a reserved section.

Leverette anticipates seating between 150 and 200 people, including the VIPs. For more information, call Leverette at (719)205-0722 or visit triplethreatgym.com.
